Oriental Dance & its benefits

Raqs Sharqi, which means Oriental Dance in Arabic, is one of the oldest dance styles of the world. Some theories says that it was born in Egypt a million years ago and was spread to the ocident, Middle East and India by the gypsies.

In ancient Egypt women danced to celebrate life, fertility and to give a healthy birth to their children. The Egyptian priestess danced inside the temple of Isis, Godess of fertility, for religious purposes.
Nowadays, women in the Middle East and Northeastern Africa dance in special occasions such as family parties, birthdays and weddings.

Belly Dance is fascinating to watch and marvellous to dance. The most important thing is that dancing is a body expression. The dancer does not need to have a certain body type, religion, social level, race or age. Raqs Sharqi can be danced by everybody.
It is very interesting to see the great results that belly dance causes in the body, mind and soul. This dance develops and tones the muscles, oxygenates and massages the inner organs such as the uterus (womb) and intestines (bowels).

  • Stiffness
  • The Oriental Dance works many different body parts, isolating the movements on the feet, legs, hips, rib cage, chest, shoulders, head, arms and hands. It soothens back, shoulder and neck pain caused by stress stiffness.

  • Better blood circulation
  • When you dance, your muscles need oxygen and your blood stream works hard to provide oxygen to the muscles. This way your heart beat increases, making the blood move with more intensity, cleaning the toxins from the cells revitalizing your metabolism.

  • Improve blood pressure
  • Some researches proved that any form of physical exercise or dancing is a great side treatment for those who suffer from high blood pressure.

Menstrual cramps, PMS( Pre Menstrual Syndrome ) and digestive system

It has been proved that the menstrual pain really decreases after an oriental dance class. Due to pelvic movements the womb contracts and with this natural massage there is no need to take any medication to avoid pain. In ancient times, Arabian women danced before the day they were gonna give birth just to ease the pain and prepare their hips and pelvis to be flexible during labour. Those who suffer from PMS can have very good results after dancing because the body is warmed up and mind relaxed after serotonin release. For those who have constipation problems, belly dance really improves the intestines natural movements making them more lubricated and healthy.

Burning extra calories

According to research, one hour of belly dance can make you burn from 250 to 300 calories." I know that from my own experience. When I did not have time at all to dedicate to DANCING, I was just working as an English teacher and studying in the evenings at University, I put on around 50 kilos! I spent two and a half years with no time at all for dancing or any physical activity. But then I decided to take good care of my health and to save some time for my mind, body and soul. I took up belly dance lessons and did not stop. I lost 50 kilos and shaped my body dancing and eating right. I rescued my self esteem the moment I stepped into my first Belly Dance class!"

Self Esteem and Creativity

The Oriental Dance practice improves your body awareness and self esteem, which estimulates having a positive point of view of your own life making you accept yourself exactly the way you are. It also helps creativity, making you develop your own style of dancing while you work with improvisation.
